A view from a giant, frozen world, travelling through the void;
being flanked by two shepard moons, one, a dead, rocky orb, the other, bright, active and volcanic, being torn by gravity and brought to life; and these two moons, keeping a majestic ring of ice circling the icy sphere.
This was fun, to say the least; Absolutely fantastic doing a celestial piece from this kind of FOV, and it's definetely unusual in celestial art; and I (think I) may have the first ring system drawn from the ringed planet itself on DeviantArt. Or something.
As it stands, I've learnt a lot from this piece; I've refined my moon/planet techniques a deal, As clearly seen; and the techniques used to produce the icy ring system are definetely useful, and I imagine may come in exceptionally handy in future pieces.
Of course, you know what my nebula are like by now; I like to think I've evolved a certain 'style' for nebulae. I also know, that by all accounts, the nebula shouldn't be visible in that light; artistic license.
On the other hand... this picture was a nightmare in some respects. The bottom planet had several evolutions before becoming the frigid wasteland in the final piece, including a green, lush world; however, these really, really didn't work out, so the iceball was the result. I'm still not 100% pleased with it, but it's definitely still pleasing; although I'd have loved the original terrestrial planet planned, it simply didn't work with the piece.
As mentioned in some scraps, I also planned a cloud system for the world; however, this simply failed miserably, and was quickly put on the back burner. I'm not doing that for a while, until I improve a lot in that area.
Anyway; I'm truly proud of this piece, and as the first art piece I've submitted in what's been creeping close to a year, I hope you enjoy this, and appreciate the work involved.
Anyway, now for those lovely technical stats you all ignore:
Time taken: 40-50+ hours.
Tools: Adobe Photoshop 7.
Textures; some random rocks used. Granite is the most fantastically versatile texture ever, you know?
Layers: Too many to count. Really.
Source File Size: 228.8MB.
Full Resolution: 5000x2000 pixels.
What can i say, one of your most impressive pictures yet, The rings, nebulae, planets.. everything sort of melds together well, i personally would have applied some contrast, but its not a big deal really, i guess you where going for a sort of misty picture, so it worked out well!
I have presented this to my friends.
Thank you so much!!
its something out of the square, you know??? while still being visualy stunning...
great job man... love your work.
its been a while.
